| 29. Oktober 2002 | Seit Oktober 1999 versorgt der für WorldSpace entwickelte Satellit AfriStar den gesamten afrikanischen Kontinent mit direkt empfangbaren Radioprogrammen. Dazu wird ein speziell entwickeltes Komprimierungsverfahren benutzt, das einen fast an CD-Qualität heranreichenden Empfang mit mobilen Empfänger ermöglicht. Bereits eine nur wenige Zentimeter Durchmesser große Antenne reicht für den Empfang aus. WorldSpace Gründer Noah Samara wollte damit sogenannten "Dritte-Welt-Ländern" (AsiaStar wurde im Jahr 2000 gestartet, der geplante AmeriStar soll Südamerika versorgen) einen preiswerten und einfachen internationalen Informations- und Unterhaltungsdienst liefern. Allerdings konnten sich nur wenige Afrikaner die dann doch recht teuren Empfänger leisten, so dass WorldSpace ein finanzielles Dilemma drohte. Schnell stellte sich aber heraus, dass die Programme auch in weiten Teilen Europas einwandfrei zu empfangen waren. Exotische Stationen wie Killa, Ngoma, Ritmo, Kaya und andere Sender in FM Qualität (insgesamt über 40 allein auf AfriStar) fanden schnell Liebhaber. Man erkannte schnell das wirtschaftliche Potential so dass die europäische Zentrale in London entsprechende Vermarktungskonzepte entwickelte. | Since October 1999 AfriStar is serving the whole African continent. Developed and owned by WorldSpace this is the first satellite to deliver a direct-to-receiver audio service. Especially for WorldSpace developed compression processes enable near CD-quality reception on mobile receivers. Antennas with just several centimetres in diameter can pick up the signal directly from the satellite. WorldSpace founder Noah Samara planned to serve so called "third-world-countries" (AsiaStar was launched in 2000, South America and the Caribbean will be served by the planned AmeriStar) with international news, education and entertainment in an easy and affordable way. However in the end the receivers turned out to be quite expensive and only very few Africans could afford them. A finacial predicament loomed ahead. But soon it became clear that wide parts of Europe had good reception of the AfriStar satellite. Exotic names like Killa, Ngoma, Ritmo, Kaya and other stations in FM quality (over 40 on AfriStar alone) soon caught the interest of European listeners. Not long until WorldSpace recognised the economic potential and the London management looked into various marketing strategies to utilise on this. | October 29th 2002 |

| Bei meinem Besuch hatte ich das Glück vom technischen Manager Dale Bradley herumgeführt zu werden. Erstes Ziel war deshalb natürlich das technische Herz im Keller unter den Büros. Als eines von vier weltweiten Zentralen werden hier nicht alle, sondern nur die technisch sinnvollen Programminhalte angeliefert. Dabei kommen die Signale analog oder digital, per ISDN-Leitung, via Satellitenlink oder über Ballempfang hier an. Ein Programm aus dem Libanon kommt zum Beispiel analog über ISDN. | When visiting the UK headquarter I was lucky to be shown around by technical manager Dale Bradley. So of course our fist stop was the technical heart of the London operation. As one of four centres worldwide not all but the technically practical programming content arrive here. The signals are received analogue or digital either on ISDN-line, by satellite or micro-link. Programming from Lebanon for example is received analogue by ISDN. |

| In einem ersten Schritt werden alle Programme in ein digitales Signal gewandelt und danach Störungen herausgefiltert. Die solcherart vereinheitlichten und gereinigten Programme werden dann über ein in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fraunhofer Gesellschaft entwickeltes System in ein Multiplex-Signal gewandelt (d. h. die einzelnen Programmkanäle werden in kleine Zeitsegmente geteilt und diese einzelnen Teile dann abwechselnd hintereinander in einem einzigen Kanal zusammen kodiert). Dieser Kanal mit allen Programminformation gelangt dann per ISDN-Leitung nach Bedford, ca. 100 Kilometer nördlich von London wo WorldSpace eine eigene Uplink-Schüssel stehen hat. | First all programmes are converted into a digital signal. Then this signal is filtered and processed to get a high quality clean sound. Thus standardised and cleaned a system invented in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institut multiplexes these signals. This means that all the various channels are divided into small time pieces. These various pieces are coded alternating into one new channel. This single channel containing all programmes is then send 100 kilometres north by ISDN-line to Bedford to be uplinked from a WorldSpace owned dish. |

Beim Auftreten eines Defektes in London kann ein immer anwesender Techniker auf vorhandene Ersatzeinrichtungen umschalten. | Automatic and manual monitoring ensures a smooth running of all programmes. In case of a fault occurring in London there is always a technician on duty to rectify the situation. Spare systems just have to be switched on if needed. |

| Zur Zeit hat WorldSpace weltweit rund 400.000 Empfänger verkauft und momentan ist die Nachfrage so groß, dass es schon Lieferschwierigkeiten gibt. Eine Stückzahl von einer Million verkauften Empfängern dürfte deshalb in der nahen Zukunft erreicht werden. In dieser Größenordnung wird WorldSpace dann für internationale Werbekunden (wie z. B. Coca-Cola, Autofirmen oder Telefondienstanbieter) interessant. Ein System das über unhörbare Codesignale entsprechende Werbespots in alle Programme einblenden kann ist bereits installiert und erprobt. Ein weiteres Puzzlestück im Kampf um Hörer und verkaufte Empfänger ist die Produktion eigener Programme. So bietet WorldSpace z. B. zwei arabische Non-Stop-Musikprogramme (Klassik und Pop) an die inzwischen in praktisch allen arabischen Restaurants in London und in ganz Großbritannien die Hintergrundmusik liefern. | At the moment WorldSpace has sold about 400,000 receivers worldwide and increasing demand is causing delays on delivery. In the not to distant future WorldSpace will have sold one million units. When this number is reached Worldspace will get attractive to international advertisers like Coca-Cola, car manufacturers or telephone services. Already installed and tested is a system with inaudible cue tones that can insert advertising into any programme. Another piece of the puzzle to gain more listeners and sell more receivers is the production of own programming content. For example WorldSpace is offering two Arabic non-stop-music programmes (classic and pop). Most Arabic restaurants in London and in the UK nationwide now use one of these services as background music on their premises. |

| Fast eine Stunde lang opferte der auch noch für die Verkaufsabteilung zuständige Dale seiner Zeit um mir ausführlich viele technische Details und Hintergründe zu erklären. Selbst der Chef von WorldSpace UK, Atef S. Awad, nahm sich zwischen zwei Terminen ausführlich Zeit die Zukunftspläne von WorldSpace mit mir zu diskutieren. Ich fühlte mich durch diese Aufmerksamkeit sehr geehrt und möchte nicht versäumen, mich auch an dieser Stelle herzlich zu bedanken. | Dale, also responsible for the sales department nearly gave a full hour of his time away for a detailed tour explaining various technical aspects in detail and giving me background information. | Inzwischen sind relativ preiswerte Empfänger für WorldSpace erhältlich, so dass ein Einstieg in diesen mobilen Satellitenempfang eine Überlegung wert ist. Neben den anfangs erwähnten exotische Stationen finden sich auch internationale Anbieter wie BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, WRN und andere auf WorldSpace. Ein deutschsprachiges Angebot ist zur Zeit in Planung. Weitere Informationen und zum Beispiel das aktuelle Programmangebot gibt es direkt auf den Internetseiten von WorldSpace. | In the meantime WorldSpace receivers are available at reasonable prices making it worthwhile to think about entering mobile satellite reception now. Besides the before mentioned exotic stations there are also international names like the BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, WRN and others to be found on WorldSpace. Even a German service is planned.
