Im Oktober 1997 startete EKR als Satellitenstation via Astra aus Studios in Maidstone (siehe hier). Stationsgründer Peter Leutners Plan, die Station auch über die im Aufbau befindliche DAB Plattform landesweit auszustrahlen schlug leider fehl. Verzögerungen bei der nationalen DAB Einführung bedeuteten fehlende Werbeeinnahmen und so musste EKR aus finanziellen Gründen im Januar 1999 die Sendungen einstellen. Allerdings konnte Radio Caroline damals Studios und Satellitenkanal übernehmen. Die Vorarbeit von EKR führte also dazu, dass damals eine neue Phase der Sendeaktivität des ehemaligen Seesenders begann. |
In October 1997 EKR started as an Astra satellite station from studios in Maidstone (see here). However station founder Peter Leutners intention to establish EKR as a nationwide service on the new DAB platform failed. Delays in the allotment of an appropriate license meant missing advertising revenue and in January 1999 EKR had to close down due to financial reasons. However at the time Radio Caroline could take over the studios and satellite channel. Thus EKR prepared the ground for a new phase in the broadcasting history of the former offshore radio station. |

Trotz des herben finanziellen Rückschlags verlor Peter Leutner sein Ziel einer Radiostation mit klassischer Rockmusik nie aus den Augen. Die fortschreitende Entwicklung des Internets mit Web-Radio bot die Möglichkeit eines Neuanfangs mit relativ geringer finanzieller Belastung. Während Peter Leutner EKR 1997 im großen Stil startete, hofft er nun die Station in kleinen Schritten zu einem erfolgreichen Unternehmen zu machen. In John Brocks fand er einen Mitstreiter der über entsprechende Erfahrung im Aufbau einer Internet Radiostation verfügte und gleichzeitig ein profundes Musik-Wissen mitbrachte. |
Despite the severe financial setback Peter Leutner continued to pursue his ambition to establish a radio station playing classic rock tracks. The continued development of Internet and web-radio applications offered the opportunity of a restart with a relatively low budget. In 1997 Peter Leutner started EKR on a large scale. This time he is hoping to develop the enterprise step by step into a successful company. With John Brocks he found an associate with the relevant experience to set up a web based radio station and with a profound music knowledge at the same time. |

Für viele Hörer war EKR die beste Rock-Station aller Zeiten. Da nach wie vor ein entsprechendes Angebot im Äther fehlte wurde immer wieder der Wunsch nach der Rückkehr von European Klassik Rock geäußert. Im Juni 2008 war es dann soweit. Der erste Server wurde mit dem Internet verbunden. Ab November 2008 konnten die automatisierten Testprogramme durch erste moderierte Programme ergänzt werden. Ostern 2009 folgte die offizielle Stationseröffnung. Seither kann die Station regen Zuspruch und eine monatlich um ca. 10 Prozent steigende Hörerzahl verbuchen. |
Many listeners rated EKR as the best rock station of all times. As there is still no other radio station on air catering for their taste the hope for a return of EKR was repeatedly expressed. In June 2008 the waiting had an end. The first server was connected to the Internet and test transmissions of EKR started. Since November 2008 the automated programming was supplemented by moderated shows. Easter 2009 saw the official opening of the station. Since then the station has a constant flow of new listeners. Every month the number of people tuning in increases by about 10 per cent. |

Neben der ansprechenden Musikauswahl klassischer, neuer und unbekannter Künstler - die EKR einen neuen, frischen und inspirierenden Anspruch verleihen - legen Peter Leutner und John Brocks großen Wert auf eine moderne technische Ausstattung. Mehr als ein Dutzend Rechner sind damit beschäftigt die qualitativ hochwertige Bereitstellung der Station zu gewährleisten. So bietet EKR 7 Internet-Streams mit insgesamt 26 verschiedenen Hörformaten von 24k mono bis 128k stereo an. Sogar der mobile Empfang von EKR ist über G3 Mobiltelefone, z.B. das Apple i-Phone oder die neuen Internet Autoradios möglich. Besides the carefully chosen music from classic, current and unsigned rock bands - making EKR to a rock station on a new, fresh and inspirational level - Peter Leutner and John Brocks put their emphasis on state of the art equipment. For example more than a dozen computers work hard to secure the availability and high quality of the station. Altogether EKR offers 7 internet-streams giving the listeners a variety of 26 different ways and formats to listen to the station starting at 24k mono up to 128k stereo. Even mobile reception of EKR by means of a G3 mobile phone (like the Apple i-phone) or the new generation of internet car radios is feasible. Neben den bereits erwähnten zahlreichen Computern (die durch eine stationseigene 5KW Windturbine mit Strom versorgt werden) ist die technische Ausstattung des Studios noch von besonderem Interesse. Das Mischpult stammt von Alice aus der Soundtech Serie A. Als Programm für die Ablaufsteuerung des Senders dient das BCX playout system der Firma Barrcode. Obwohl die gesamte Musik auf Festplatte gespeichert ist gibt es, wie es sich für ein richtiges Studio gehört, einen CDN22 Doppel CD Spieler der Firma Numark sowie einen Sony Mini-Disk Spieler. EKR dürfte außerdem eine der wenigen Webstationen sein die ein (kostspieliges) Orban Optimod-FM System zur Signaloptimierung im Einsatz hat. |
Besides the already mentioned numerous computers all over the premises (powered by EKR's own 5 KW wind turbine) the equipment used in the studio is of particular interest. The mixer is Alice build from the Soundtech Series A. The computerized programming of the station is done by the BCX playout system by Barrcode. Though all the songs are stored on hard disc there are still a Numark CDN22 double CD player and a Sony Mini-Disc player. Furthermore EKR is probably one of the very few web radio stations that employ an (expensive) Orban Optimod-FM system to optimize the output signal. |

Zum Abschied ließ es sich Peter Leutner nicht nehmen mir den Empfang von EKR via G3 Mobiltelefon in seinem Auto (einem der ersten Hybridautos das vor einigen Jahren nach Grossbritannien eingeführt wurde) vorzuführen. |
