| 2. Jan. 2003 | In fast jeder britischen Radiostation findet man zumindest eine Person die einmal auf einem Seesender gearbeitet hat. Ganz besonders trifft dies aber auf die Grafschaft Kent zu. Das in diesem Bezirk ziemlich zentral gelegene Maidstone ist deshalb ein idealer Standort für die heutigen Caroline-Studios - und nach meinem Besuch dort ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für weitere Exkursionen. Etwa eine halbe Autostunde später bin ich in Canterbury bei CTFM. (CTFM Jingle, MP3 - 38kB) Wie schon bei meinem früheren Besuch werde ich von Bob Mower herzlich empfangen. Seit dem letzten Mal ist Bob zum Stationsmanager aufgestiegen, seine tägliche Sendung von 14 bis 19 Uhr moderiert er aber weiterhin. Als ich gegen 16 Uhr eintreffe ist er bereits ganz alleine. Die Übernahme der Station durch die KM Zeitungsgruppe hat wie befürchtet zu einer weiteren Kostenreduzierung (= Stellenabbau) geführt, so verlor z: B. Nigel Harris seine regelmäßige Mittagssendung bei CTFM. Im Rahmen der Umstrukturierung wurden die Nachrichtenredaktionen der verschiedenen von der KM-Gruppe betriebenen Stationen an einen zentralen Ort verlegt und auch CTFM wird in Kürze umziehen. Und am 13. Januar 2003, also noch bevor diese Zeilen ins Internet gestellt werden können, wird es einen Relaunch von CTFM unter neuem Namen KM-fm 106 geben. So sind die folgenden Bilder nicht nur eine Momentaufnahme meines Besuches sondern auch der vielleicht letzte nostalgische Blick auf einen abgeschlossenen Teil der Stationsgeschichte von CTFM. | Within nearly every British radio station there is at least on person who has in one way or another worked for an offshore radio project. This is especially true for the county of Kent. Situated more or less in the middle of this area is Maidstone. Therefore the town is an ideal place for today's Caroline studios. And following my visit to these studios it is an excellent starting point for further excursions. About half an hour later by car I arrive in Canterbury where I will be visiting CTFM. (CTFM jingle, MP3 - 38kB) I visited the station before and again Bob Mower gives me a warm welcome. Since last time Bob has been made station manager but he is still presenting his afternoon show between 2pm and 7pm. When I arrive at 4pm the station is already deserted and Bob is all on his own. The acquirement of a controlling interest in the station by the KM group had the effect that had been feard for: further cost minimising (including reducing the work force). Nigel Harris for example lost his regular noon-show at CTFM. I line with the re-organisation the news departments of the various stations run by the KM group were relocated to one central point (across the road from the CTFM studios). CTFM itself will be moving to these new premises as well very shortly. January 13th will even see a relaunch of CTFM with a new name KM-fm 106. Thus the following pictures are not only a snap-shot at the moment of my visit but probably the last nostalgic look at a now completed part of the history of CTFM. | Jan. 2nd 2003 |

| Trotz des automatisierten Ablaufs mit RCS Master Control und des "No-Talk" Formats (d. h. individuelle Ansagen zwischen den Musikstücken sind nicht erwünscht) hat Bob Mower in dieser Sendestunde viel zu tun da er mehrere Aktionen betreuen muss und außerdem die Verkehrsnachrichten und privaten Stellenanzeigen live auf den Sender gehen. (kurze Ansage von Bob Mower, MP3 - 115kB) Trotzdem erklärt er mir ausführlich das neue Playout-System und zeigt mir wie er durch Verschieben, Löschen und Einfügen von Musiktiteln, Jingles und Trailern den Zeitplan so ändert, dass das Programm genau zur vollen Stunde zum Beginn der Nachrichten endet. (Nachrichtenjingle, MP3 - 70kB) Wir kommen überein, dass dieses System die Arbeit eines DJ's deutlich vereinfacht. Gleichzeitig besteht aber die Gefahr, dass die Stationsbesitzer verstärkt rundfunkunerfahrene oder sogar rundfunkungeeignete (aber preiswerte) Personen einstellen was letztendlich in einem niveauarmen und glanzlosen Programm endet. Bob glaubt, dass in etwa zwei Jahren die jetzigen Investoren bemerken werden, dass sich radikale Kostensenkungen negativ auf die Hörerzahlen und damit auf die Werbeeinnahmen und die Ertragslage auswirken. | Though the station is working with the RCS Master Control automation computer system and has a "no-talk" format (individual links between tracks are not desired) Bob still had plenty of work during the hour of my visit. He had to take care of several actions, had to prepare the traffic news and read the local job options live. (short link by Bob Mower, MP3 - 115kB) Nonetheless he finds time to extensively explain the new playout system to me. He shows me how he can alter the time table by moving deleting and adding music tracks, jingles and trailers. Finally everything is in place in the programme will end exactly at the top of the hour just before the news start. (news jingle, MP3 - 70kB) We agree that this playout system clearly simplifies the work of the Presenter. At the same time however station owners may believe that they can employ inexperienced or even unsuitable (but inexpensive) personnel. But this will eventually lead to a mediocre and dull programme. Bob believes that in about two years time the investors will realise that axing the costs will have a negative impact on the listening figures and consequently on the income from advertising and the profitability of the station. |

| Noch ist der Tag nicht vorbei und so fahre ich noch einmal eine halbe Stunde weiter bis nach Margate. Hier, fast am östlichen Ende von Kent will ich mir einmal die Lokalstation TLR (ab März 2003: Thanet's KM-fm) anschauen. Nach einer erfolgreichen RSL-Lizenz konnte TLR im Januar 1998 den regulären Betrieb aufnehmen. Die Station befindet sich im Imperial House, einem ehemaligen Hotel aus der Blütezeit Margates als Seebad. Durch einen imposanten, holzverzierten Empfangsraum erreiche ich den Lift der mich in den dritten Stock bringt. Dort werde ich von niemand geringerem als Johnny "the lad" Lewis empfangen. Man hatte mich vorgewarnt, ansonsten hätte ich den jetzt gertenschlanken Johnny wohl kaum wieder erkannt. Johnny ist zwar nach wie vor ein Freund von einem Glas Bier oder auch zwei, aber ausdauerndes Training im Fitness-Studio hat ihm zu einem gesunden Gewicht verholfen. | The day is not yet over and so I decide to travel on to Margate. Half an hour later I arrive at the nearly eastern end of Kent. My destination is TLR (from March 2003: Thanet's KM-fm) the local radio station for this part of the world. Following a successful RSL broadcast TLR started regular broadcasts in January 1998. The station has its studios and offices in Imperial House a former hotel from Margate's prime time as a seaside resort. At the end of an impressive hall with wooden decoration I take the lift to the third floor. Nobody less but Johnny "the lad" Lewis greats me. I had advance warning otherwise I wouldn't had recognised lithe and lissom Johnny. He still likes his pint or two but determined working out in the gym reduced his weight to a healthy level. |

| TLR verwendet das gleiche Playout-System wie CTFM und so hat auch Johnny genug Zeit um sich mit mir zu unterhalten. Jetzt, nach 18 Uhr ist er natürlich ebenfalls alleine aber tagsüber wird das geräumige Büro von einem kleinen, aber schon fast familiärem Team belebt. TLR gehört bereits seit 1999 zur KM-Gruppe und so sind hier die zur Zeit bei CTFM stattfindenden Umstrukturierungen kein Thema. Direkt an der Strandpromenade gelegen geht der Blick aus dem Studio- bzw. Bürofenster je nach Richtung direkt bis nach Norwegen bzw. Holland - nur von Wasser und der Erdkrümmung unterbrochen. Johnny berichtet mir, dass bei manchen Stürmen die Gischt bis an die Fenster im dritten Stock gelangt. Kein Wunder also, dass Johnny immer wieder mal kleine Anekdoten aus seiner Seesenderzeit im Programm unterbringt. Überhaupt scheint mir das TLR-Programm eine etwas familiärere Atmosphäre als das No-Talk Schema von CTFM zu bieten. | TLR is using the same playout system as CTFM and so Johnny had enough time to talk with me. Now, past 6pm he is alone of course but during the daytime the spacious office is filled with life by a small but dedicated team. Since 1999 TLR is part of the KM group and the current restructuring at CTFM does not affect the Margate station. Situated right by the promenade looking out of the studio respectively office window there is nothing but water between here and Norway or Holland. Johnny tells me that some storms bring the spray of the waves right up to the windows in the third floor. No wonder that Johnny ever so often tells little anecdotes from his time at offshore radio. In general the TLR -programme seems to offer a more familiar atmosphere than the "no-talk" format of CTFM. |

| Um 19 Uhr beendet Johnny Lewis sein Programm und stellt das Mischpult auf Automatik um. Bis 6 Uhr wird jetzt das Programm von CTFM übernommen. In der Praxis sieht das so aus, dass in das Playout-System leere Zeitblöcke eingefügt werden die dafür sorgen, dass der mit dem CTFM Programm belegte Regler offen bleibt. Lediglich zur vollen Stunde enthält das Playout-System einen Nachrichtenblock der dem entsprechenden Kanal auf dem Mischpult zugeordnet wird. Per ISDN-Einwahl in das Mischpult kommen die lokalisierten Nachrichten direkt aus der KM-Zentrale. | At 7pm Johnny ends his programme and he switches the mixer and playout system to automatic mode. Until 6 in the morning TLR will relay the programme of CTFM. In practice there are empty time blocks in the playout system that keep the fader with the CTFM feed open. Only at the top of the hour there is a news segment in the playout system which opens the appropriate channel on the mixer. By ISDN dial-up the localised news are feed directly into the mixer from the KM news centre. |
