| Okt. 2004 | Im letzten Bericht für das Jahr 2004 geht es einmal nicht um Seesender oder Free Radio. Für die letzte Reise des Jahres verlasse ich sogar Europa. Ich gönne mir einen mehrwöchigen Aufenthalt in Seoul und (Süd)Korea. Neben den touristischen Zielen gibt es auch einige rundfunkrelevante Geschichten und Bilder. Zur Orientierung auf dieser etwas umfangreichen Seite hier erst einmal eine kleine Übersicht der einzelnen Stationen: | The last story for 2004 is neither dealing with offshore radio nor free radio. Fernsehturm Seoul Ein touristisch und auch rundfunkmäßig interessantes Ziel ist der Fernsehturm von Seoul. Das im Jahre 1975 fertig gestellte Wahrzeichen der Stadt wurde auf der Spitze des fast 250 Meter hohen Namsan errichtet. Der höchste Punkt des fast 240 Meter hohen Seoul Tower liegt knapp unter 500 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Die Aussichtsplattform befindet sich auf 370 Metern Höhe und bietet einen Blick über ganz Seoul und bei klarer Sicht bis zu 50 km ins Umland und bis zum gelben bzw. ostchinesischem Meer. |
Seoul TV Tower Seoul tower is a attraction from a touristic point of view but just as well a worthwhile destination for the technical minded visitor. Build in 1975 on top of the nearly 250 metre high Namsan the tower is a famous landmark of Soul. The tower itself is nearly 240 metres high. This means that the highest point is close to 500 metres above sea level. The viewing platform is at 370 metre overlooking every part of Seoul. On days with clear weather and high visibility you can see as far as 50 km into the surrounding countryside and to the yellow respectively east China sea. |

Besuch bei RKI Bei Radio Korea International, dem Auslandsdienst von KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), habe ich Gelegenheit die deutsche Redaktion zu besuchen. In einem Großraumbüro sind neben der deutschen Sprachredaktion noch weitere neun Fremdsprachenabteilungen untergebracht. Lediglich die russische Abteilung hat hier keinen Platz mehr gefunden und residiert in einem anderen Raum. Entlang der Fensterfront mit Blick auf den Yeouido-Park sitzen sich die Mitarbeiter der jeweiligen Sprachabteilungen an einem langen Tisch gegenüber. Ein tägliches Programm zusammenzustellen ist viel Arbeit und so werde ich nach einer kurzen Begrüßung in ein Studio zum Interview gebeten. Noch sind die deutschen Besucher so selten, dass man jedem Gast einen Interviewplatz im Programm reservieren kann. Frau Stern-Ko hat Erfahrung mit Besucherinterviews und so vergehen die geplanten zehn Gesprächsminuten wie im Fluge. |
Visiting RKI At Radio Korea International, the overseas service of KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), I have the opportunity to visit the German department. Apart from the German language department an open-plan office is home to further nine foreign language editing teams. Only the Russian team did not find any place here and does reside in another room. Along the window front with a view onto the Yeouido-Park the employees of each language section sit opposite each other at a long table. To compile a daily program is quite a lot of work and following a short welcome I am asked into a studio for an interview. As yet the German visitors are so rare that it is possible to fit an interview into the program for every guest. Mrs. Stern-Ko has a lot of experience with interviewing visitors and so the planned ten minutes for the conversation passed by in no time. |

Fotos von MBC Nach dem Besuch bei RKI schaue ich mich noch ein wenig auf Yeouido - 8,4 Quadratkilometer große Insel im Han-Fluss (Hangang) - um. Neben KBS haben hier auch MBC (Munwha Broadcasting Corporation) und SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System) ihre Studios. Außerdem ist diese Insel das Finanz- und Wirtschaftszentrum Seouls. Die Börse, Wirtschafts- und Industrieverbände, die Nationalversammlung, Koreas eigene Twin Towers und Koreas höchstes Bauwerk (63 Building) sind hier unter anderem zu finden. |
Photographs of MBC Following my visit to RKI I have a look around Yeouido, a 8.4 square kilometer big island in the Han-river (Hangang). Not only KBS also MBC (Munwha Broadcasting Corporation) and SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System) have their studios here. In addition this island is the finance and economy centre of Seoul. The stock exchange, economy- and industry associations, the national assembly, Korea's own Twin Towers and Korea's highest building (63 Building) are to be found here among other things. |

Fotos von WBS Bei einem meiner Streifzüge durch Seoul treffe ich ganz zufällig auf Radio WBS (Won Buddhism Broadcasting System). Direkt am Han-Fluss und dem Olympic Expressway im Stadtteil Heukseok-dong gelegen ist dieser Sender im Zentrum für Won-Buddhismus untergebracht. Auf mein Klingeln am Haupteingang rührt sich allerdings nichts. Über einen Nebeneingang komme ich doch in das Gebäude und stehe vor einer langen Glasfront. Im dahinter liegendem großen Redaktionsraum sehe ich nur einen einzigen Mitarbeiter der allerdings über seiner Arbeit eingeschlafen zu sein scheint. Ich will ihn nicht wecken, nur um dann festzustellen dass ich mich mit ihm nicht in Englisch verständigen kann. Bei schwindendem Licht (gegen 17 Uhr wird es bereits dunkel) mache ich noch schnell einige Fotos des Gebäudes. |
Photographs of WBS During one of my excursions across Seoul I pass by WBS (Won Buddhism Broadcasting System) just by chance. Right next to the Han river and the Olympic Expressway in the Heukseok-dong district this station is based at the Won-buddhism-centre. I am ringing at the main entrance but nobody answers. Through a side entrance I can still enter the building and come to a long glass panel. Behind the window is a big editorial office but I can only see one employee. And he seems to have fallen asleep over his work. I don't want to wake him up. Most probably he does not speak English and then it would be quite difficult to explain my interest in WBS. With the light fading away (by 5pm it starts to get quite dark already) I quickly take some photographs of the building and move on. |

Besuch bei Arirang FM Nach dem Besuch bei Radio Korea ist dies der zweite geplante Besuch eines Radiosenders in Seoul. Bereits von Deutschland aus hatte ich einen Besuchswunsch angemeldet und von Chef-Produzent Jae-shin Chung auch eine Einladung erhalten. In Seoul selbst meldet sich dann Dohee Kim per Mail bei mir und bittet mich für ein Interview in ihrer Show zur Verfügung zu stehen. Diesem Wunsch entspreche ich natürlich gerne. |
My visit to Arirang FM Following my visit to Radio Korea this is the second planned visit of a radio station in Seoul. Still in Germany I had already asked for permission to visit the station and in due course chief producer Jae-shin Chung did sent me an invitation. When in Seoul Dohee Kim contacts me by e-mail. She would like to interview me in her show. Of course I have pleasure in agreeing to her wish. |

| Allerdings weiß ich nur die ungefähre Lage des Sendegebäudes. In Seoul haben die Strassen keine Namen, die Adressen bilden sich aus einem mir unverständlichen System von Stadtteil, Distrikt und irgendwelchen Nummern. Die nach dem Weg befragten Koreaner reagieren sehr hilfreich aber offensichtlich auch ziemlich unwissend. So verlasse ich mich doch lieber auf mein Gefühl und erblicke schon bald das Gebäude von Arirang TV, natürlich ganz oben auf einem Hügel. Etwas verschwitzt, aber noch pünktlich erreiche ich Arirang FM. Vor dem Fahrstuhl werde ich direkt von Dohee begrüßt und mit einigen belegten Broten versorgt. Nach mehreren Wochen original koreanischem Frühstück ist das eine willkommene Abwechslung. Dohee hat lange Zeit in den USA gelebt und ist erst seit zwei Jahren wieder in Korea. Sie spricht deshalb sehr gut Englisch - wie übrigens alle Mitarbeiter von Arirang FM. | The problem is that I only roughly know where the Arirang building is. The streets of Seoul have no names. The system in which the addresses are put together of quarter, district and mysterious numbers is unintelligible to me. The Koreans I ask for directions react in a very helpful way but quite obviously they as well haven't got a clue where Arirang is. The only solution is to go by feeling and in fact it is not long until I catch a first glimpse of the building. Of course it is on top of a hill. A bit sweaty but still in time I arrive at Arirang FM. Leaving the elevator Dohee is there to welcome me. She has organised some sandwiches. After weeks of original Korean breakfast this is a welcome change to my diet. Dohee lived a long time in the United States. It is only two years ago that she returned to Korea. That is why she fluently speaks English - just as everybody else at Arirang. |

| Arirang FM ist ein Ableger von Arirang TV (seit 1999 werden über jetzt zehn Satelliten weltweit Informationen über Korea in englischer Sprache verbreitet) - trotzdem ist die Station mit sechs Studios bestens ausgestattet. Dabei sind drei kleine Live-Studios (hier haben neben dem Sprecher nur noch ein bis zwei Gäste Platz) in einem Kreisbogen um den riesigen zentralen Kontrollraum angeordnet. Dann gibt es noch einen kleinen Kontrollraum mit angeschlossenem kleinen Produktionsstudio und einen großen Kontrollraum mit einem großen Produktionsstudio in dem auch größere Gruppen Platz hätten. In das sechste und kleinste Studio kann man sich zurückziehen um kleinere Produktions- oder Bearbeitungsaufgaben zu erledigen. Neben einem großen Büro-/Verwaltungsraum befindet sich auf der achten Etage des Arirang Towers auch noch die Musikbibliothek. Bei meinem Besuch im Oktober 2004 befanden sich hier ca. 20.000 CDs. Bis Ende 2005 möchte man mit 50.000 Tönträgern einen vorläufigen Endstand erreicht haben. | Arirang FM is an independent spin-off of Arirang TV (since 1999 Arirang TV transmits information about Korea in English - by now using ten different satellites to reach every part of the world). The radio station is well equipped with six studios. There are three small live studios (there is only room for the presenter and one or two guests) facing the huge main control room. Next door is another slightly smaller control room with a big production studio and across the corridor there is yet another but much smaller control room connected to a small production studio. The sixth and smallest studio can be used when you quickly want to check something or do other little production jobs. Apart from the studios the eight floor of the Arirang Tower houses a big office-/administration room and the music library. During my visit in October 2004 about 20,000 CD's filled only a small part of the available shelves. By the end of 2005 a preliminary target of 50,000 CD's should have been reached. |

| Arirang FM ist seit September 2003 auf Sendung, allerdings hat man nur zwei UKW-Frequenzen auf Jeju-do (eine ca. 60 km lange und 40 km breite Insel mit tropischem Flair vor der Südspitze Koreas) zur Verfügung. Ansonsten ist Arirang FM vorerst eine reine Internet-Station. Erst bei der demnächst anstehenden Einführung des digitalen Rundfunks (entsprechend DAB in Europa) wird Arirang FM einen landesweiten Kanal erhalten. Modernste Studiotechnik und die überaus reichhaltige finanzielle Ausstattung lässt darauf schließen, dass Arirang FM durch staatliche Stellen finanziert wird. Betreiber von Arirang TV und Arirang FM ist die "Internationale koreanische Rundfunkstiftung" in der neben den großen Rundfunkorganisationen (KBS, MBC, SBS) auch Vertreter von Handels-, Wirtschafts-, Industrie- und Werbeverbänden sitzen. Den überwiegenden Teil der Finanzierung übernimmt jedoch das Ministerium für Kultur und Tourismus. Die Aufgabe von Arirang FM ist in erster Linie das koreanische Volk mit der englischen Sprache vertraut zu machen und mit internationalen Nachrichten zu versorgen. Dabei ist Arirang FM nur eine der vielen Bemühungen der koreanischen Regierung die Bevölkerung für eine weitere Globalisierung der koreanischen Wirtschaft fit zu machen. | Arirang FM started broadcasting in September 2003. However there are only two FM frequencies on Jeju-do (a tropical Island off the southern tip of Korea, about 60 km long and 40 km wide) on air. Otherwise Arirang FM is solely a internet radio station. Only when in the not to distant future digital broadcasting (equivalent to DAB in Europe) will start in Korea Arirang FM will get a national channel. State-of-the-art studio equipment and a remarkably extensive financial budget leads to the conclusion that Arirang FM is financed by the state. Arirang FM is only one of the many efforts of the Korean government to prepare the country for a wider globalisation of the economy. |

Seouler Radio- und Telegrafenamt Zum Ende meines Aufenthalts in Seoul bin ich zu einer letzten Tour mit der U-Bahn-Linie Nr. 2 unterwegs. Diese Linie fährt teilweise oberirdisch und in der Nähe des Han-Flusses fällt mir an der Station Guui ein Gelände mit einem bemerkenswerten Antennenpark auf. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Anlage des Seouler Radio- und Telegrafenamtes. Leider habe ich keine Zeit mehr für eine nähere Erkundung und mache nur einige Fotos. |

Near the Han river at the Guui station I notice a site with a remarkable array of antennas. It is an installation of the Seoul radio and telegraph office. Floh- und Antikmärkte Seoul ist übersät mit Märkten auf denen es alle Waren des täglichen Bedarfs zu kaufen gibt. Der riesige Hwanghak-dong Floh- und Antikmarkt ist allerdings in fast keinem Reiseführer verzeichnet. Östlich des Dongdaemun Marktes erstreckt er sich für einige Kilometer südlich der Straße Nr. 50 (Cheonggyecheonno) und nimmt fast einen ganzen Stadtteil ein. In der Nähe der U-Bahn Station Dapsimni (Linie 5) befindet sich in zwei mehrstöckigen Gebäuden der Jangan-dong Antikmarkt. Auf beiden Märkten die kaum von Touristen besucht werden gibt es zahlreiche Händler die auch ein umfangreiches Angebot an Nostalgie-Empfängern bereithalten. |
Flea- and Antik Markets Seoul is abundant with markets where you can buy everything you need for the daily life. The gigantic flea- and antique-market Hwanghak-dong however is hardly listed in any tourist guide. Starting east of the Dongdaemun-market it extends for some kilometres south of the street no. 50 (Cheonggyecheonno) and occupies almost a whole district of Seoul. In the proximity of the underground station Dapsimni (Line 5) two multi-storey buildings house the Jangan-dong antique market. Both markets are rarely visited by tourists. Numerous traders have an extensive offer in historic receivers. |
