| 26. März 2005 | Zum 41. Geburtstag war die Ross Revenge am Osterwochenende (26. bis 28. März) wieder bei einem Tag der offenen Tür für Besucher zugänglich. Bereits um die Mittagszeit hatten schon viele Besucher den Weg nach Tilbury gefunden - und im Laufe des Nachmittags sollten es noch sehr viel mehr werden. Der Grund dafür war zum einen strahlender Sonnenschein (trotz der nach Regen tendierenden Wettervorhersage) zum anderen die Ereignisse auf der Ross Revenge. | Easter weekend 2005 (March 26th to 28th) and Radio Carolines 41st birthday the Ross Revenge once again was open for visitors. Around noon many guest already had made their way to Tilbury - and there were many more to come during the afternoon. | Besonders in den Nachmittagsstunden hatte Radio Caroline einen wahren Besucheransturm zu verkraften. Caroline Helfer führten immer wieder kleine Besuchergruppen durch das Schiff. Oft waren drei oder vier Gruppen gleichzeitig unterwegs. Auf Deck oder im relativ geräumigen Sende- und Generatorraum war dies kein Problem, aber in den schmalen Gängen zum Maschinenraum oder zur Messe wurde es doch recht eng. Besonders vor den beiden Studios gab es ein regelrechtes Gedränge da jeder einmal einen Blick hineinwerfen wollte. | Especially in the afternoon Radio Caroline had to cope with an enormous rush of people wishing to see the Ross Revenge. Caroline volunteers again and again showed visitors around the ship. At times three or four groups where simultaneously inspecting different parts of the Ross Revenge. On deck or in the spacious transmitter hold this was not a problem. But within the narrow passageways to the messroom or the engine room it could get a bit squeezy. In front of the two studios it was nearly always packed as everybody wanted to have a look inside. |

| Clive Garrard drückte das in seinem Programm so aus: "Ich fühle mich wie ein Fisch im Goldfischglas." Radio Caroline war und ist noch immer eine Station mit sehr enger Hörerbindung und so waren alle DJ's über diesen direkten Kontakt sehr erfreut - auch wenn es manchmal schwierig war sich auf das eigentliche Programm zu konzentrieren. Pandora zum Beispiel wurde so mit Fragen bombardiert, dass sie es oft erst in letzter Sekunde schaffte den nächsten Musiktitel auszuwählen. | Clive Garrad mentioned that he felt "like a goldfish in its bowl". Radio Caroline was - and still is - a station with a strong binding to its listeners. Therefore the presenteres were quite happy about this close contact - even when it was a bit difficult at times to concentrate on the programming. Pandora for example had so many questions to answer that more than once she managed (with just one second to spare) to start the next title just in time. |

| Das frühere Monique-Studio an Backbord wurde seit meinem letzten Besuch im August 2004 (hier mein Bericht) vollständig umgebaut. Während der DJ früher mit dem Rücken zur Tür saß hat er eintretende Besucher jetzt direkt im Blickfeld. Dazu wurde die Studiokonsole quer in den Raum gebaut. Neben dem Vorteil den Eingang links von sich im Blickfeld zu haben gibt es nun auch direkten Blickkontakt ins Steuerbordstudio (das größtenteils noch im Originalzustand aus den Seesenderzeiten von Radio Caroline und weiterhin voll funktionsfähig ist). Hinter dem Studiotisch gibt es außerdem nun einen kleinen Platz an dem Studiogäste für ein Interview Platz nehmen können. Nach rechts hat der DJ durch das Studiofenster einen Blick auf die Themse und den regen Schiffsverkehr. Das Mischpult (11 Kanäle) befindet sich direkt vor dem DJ, rechts ein Doppel-CD Deck (Denon DN-2000F MKII), links zwei Sony Minidisk-Geräte (ATRAC 3 DSP). Es gibt mehrere Computer, der rechte für das Playout-System (Audioenhance DPS), der linke für E-Mails. Unter dem Studiotisch steht ein weiterer Computer der das Studiosignal ins Internet einspeist. | Since my last visit in August 2004 (see my story here) the former Monique studio ( the port side studio) had been completely altered. Previously the DJ was sitting with his back to the door, now he can see directly who is entering the studio without having to turn around. The mixing desk has been build across the room. This not only has the advantage that you have the entrance within your field of vision - you can also see directly into the starboard studio behind the window (the former Caroline studio is fully operational but in most parts it is still in its original state from the time when Caroline was broadcasting from the high seas). Behind the mixing desk there is now a space where guests can take a seat for an interview. To the right the presenter can look out of the studio window onto the river Thames and the busy shipping. The eleven channel mixer is right in front of the DJ, to the right a double CD player (Denon DN-2000F MKII), to the left two Sony minidisk-player (ATRAC 3 DSP). There are several computers in the studio. The one on the right is for the playout-system (Audioenhance DPS), the one on the left for e-mails. Underneath the desk another Computer acts as a server to feed the programme into the internet. |

| Als besonderes Geburtstagsgeschenk produzierte BBC Radio Essex, unter dem Namen Pirate BBC Radio Essex, am 26. März eine vierstündige Sondersendung von der Ross Revenge. Dies war das erste Mal seit 1989, dass wieder zwei Stationen gleichzeitig von der Ross Revenge sendeten. | BBC Radio Essex came up with a special birthday present: on the afternoon of March the 26th 2005 they did a four hour live broadcast as Pirate BBC Radio Essex. It was the first time since 1989 that again two stations were broadcasting at the same time from the Ross Revenge. |

| Während Radio Caroline im vollständig renovierten und neu eingerichtetem Studio auf der Backbordseite (dem ehemaligen Monique-Studio) produziert wurde war BBC Radio Essex in das ehemalige Caroline Studio an Steuerbord eingezogen. Dieses Studio wurde zur Erzielung eines Museumscharakters bewusst in seiner ursprünglichen Form belassen. Trotz der jahrzehntealten Technik ist es voll funktionsfähig. Für Steve Scruton und seinen Co-Moderator Ian Wyatt, bei BBC Essex seit vielen Jahren an digitalisierte und computerisierte Studios gewöhnt, war es natürlich eine große Herausforderung mit dieser ungewohnten Technik umzugehen. Routiniert, aber doch etwas nervös begann Steve Scruton deshalb gegen 13 Uhr unter Anleitung von Caroline Veteran Dave Foster mit einigen Trockenübungen um sich auf den Start der Sondersendung um 14 Uhr vorzubereiten. | Whilst Radio Caroline used newly installed equipment in the completely renovated port side studio (the former Radio Monique studio) BBC Radio Essex moved into the old starboard studio (the original Caroline studio). Consciously this studio had been preserved in its original state to be looking like a museum piece. Despite the equipment having been in operation for decades everything is still in working order. For Steve Scruton and his co-presenter Ian Wyatt, used to digitalised and computerised studios at BBC Radio Essex for many years it was a great challenge to use this unfamiliar technical apparatus. Seasoned, but still just a bit nervous, Steve Scruton started with a dry run one hour before the actual start of the programme - guided and helped by Caroline Veteran Dave Foster. Such prepared everything went well with the official start at 2pm. |

Während Pandora im Nachbarstudio ihre Show produziert macht Steve Scruton einige Trockenübungen unter den wachsamen Augen von Dave Foster. Kurz vor dem Sendestart dann noch ein letzter Blick in den Programm-Ablaufplan. Man wird sich für die nächsten vier Stunden zwar zwar Pirate Radio nennen - aber es ist immer noch eine BBC Station.

| Obwohl mit Tim Gillett als drittem des BBC-Teams das Studio schon ziemlich voll war, gelang es vier bis fünf Besuchern immer wieder, sich doch noch ins Studio zu drängen. Solcherart in der Bewegungsfreiheit eingeschränkt war es nicht ganz einfach rechtzeitig in der Nähe eines gerade zu bedienenden Reglers oder Knopfes zu sein. Nassgeschwitzt aber mit sichtlichem Spaß und Genugtuung über die Meisterung der schwierigen Umstände wurde ein exzellentes Programm abgeliefert das im Laufe des Nachmittags immer mehr Besucher auf die Ross Revenge lockte. | Tim Gillett was the third member of the BBC team and the three of them had just enough space to move around in the studio. Nonetheless four or five visitors quite often managed to squeeze in as well restricting the moveability of the BBC presenters. It was not always easy for them to reach and operate the knobs and switches in time. Sweaty but obviously having great fun and satisfied to cope with the difficult circumstances they delivered an excellent programme. As a result in the course of the afternoon more and more visitors turned up on the Ross Revenge. |

| Trotz aller Vorbereitung und eines ausgeklügelten Ablaufplanes fehlten Pirate BBC Radio Essex in der letzten Sendestunde noch einige Musiktitel. Insbesondere suchte man einen passenden Beatles-Song. Da kamen Roger Day's Musikkenntnisse gerade richtig und er konnte beweisen, dass er sich in der umfangreichen Musikbibliothek auf der Ross Revenge noch auskannte. Roger amüsierte sich köstlich, dass er auf diesem Weg für die BBC tätig werden konnte. | Despite all the preparations and a cleverly worked out schedule Pirate BBC Radio Essex was short of some records in the last hour of the programme. Especially a suitable Beatles song was amiss. Good that Roger Day with his knowledge of music was around. He also proofed that he still knew his way around in the extensive music library on the Ross Revenge. Roger found it highly amusing that he could work for the BBC in this way. |

Nach vier Stunden beendeten Ian Wyatt, Steve Scruton und Tim Gillett (von links nach rechts) die Sondersendung von BBC Radio Essex aus dem ehemaligen Studio von Radio Caroline. | Auffallend an diesem Tag der offenen Tür war, dass viele der Besucher keinen direkten Bezug zu Radio Caroline hatten und häufig über den Werdegang der Station und ihren Bezug zu Schiffen aufgeklärt werden mussten. Durch die unzähligen Restaurierungs-, Säuberungs- und Aufräumarbeiten präsentierte sich die Ross Revenge in einem respektablen Zustand. Viele Besucher nutzten die Möglichkeit die Ross Revenge als authentisches und aktives Museum zu einem Teil der britischen maritimen Geschichte noch am Originalschauplatz erleben zu können (Fotorundgang). | It was astonishing on this open day that many of the visitors had no direct relationship to Radio Caroline. Quite often they had to be informed about Radio Carolines history and its connection to ships. The uncountable hours of work to clean, restore and repair the Ross Revenge resulted in a ship that presented itself in a respectable condition. Many visitors took advantage of the opportunity to explore and witness the Ross Revenge as an authentic and active museum (a tour in photographs). They experienced the Ross Revenge as a vivid and original part of the British maritime history. |
