| Charlie Wolf am 27. März 1999 bei Radio Caroline. | Charlie Wolf, dessen Fever Pitch-Einlagen bei Laser Radio unvergessen sind, wurde von Radio Caroline als Gast-DJ eingeladen. Natürlich wollte ich mir die Gelegenheit nicht entgehen lassen, Charlie Wolf endlich einmal persönlich kennenzulernen und seine Fever Pitch-Anfälle mitzuerleben. Kurz vor 17 Uhr kam ich im Studio an. Dave Foster legte gerade die letzten Scheiben seiner Show auf. Mark Stafford war ebenfalls anwesend – und natürlich auch Charlie Wolf. Eigentlich hätte ich mehr Besucher erwartet, wenn ein Star wie Charlie Wolf anwesend ist, aber für mich war die Situation natürlich vorteilhaft, da ich so ungestört meine Fotos machen konnte. | Charlie Wolfs fever-pitching on Laser Radio is not forgotten. Now Radio Caroline invited him to present a guest programme at one of their weekend satellite shows. Of course I didn't want to miss the opportunity to meet Charlie in person and witness his fever pitch attacks. Shortly before 5pm I arrived at the studio. Dave Foster was just playing the last few records of his show. Mark Stafford was there as well – and of course Charlie Wolf. With famous Charlie Wolf around I really had expected to see more visitors. | In der ersten halben Stunde ging Dave Foster Charlie zur Hand, damit er sich im unbekannten Studio zurechtfinden konnte. Als Hauptmusikquelle dienten zwei Mini-Disc-Player und eine Sammlung von rund 250 Mini-Disc. Die Einspielung von Werbespots und Jingles erfolgte über im Wave-Format vorliegende Dateien vom Computer. Wer die hier abgebildeten Fotos mit den Fotos von EKR vergleicht wird unschwer feststellen, daß es sich um das gleiche Studio handelt und ein Teil der EKR-Technik, wie z. B. der Computer und das Naumann-Mikrofon geblieben sind. Die auffälligste Änderung ist das Mischpult, das bei Caroline nicht über einen Fader-Start verfügt. | During the first half hour of Charlies Show Dave Foster instructed him on the use of the studio and cued up the first set of advertisement. Spots and jingles were stored as wave-files and could be played straight from the computer. The main source of the music where two Sony Mini-Disc Player and a library of about 250 Mini-Discs. If you compare the photographs here with those of EKR you will undoubtly notice that it is the same studio. Some of the equipment, like the Naumann-mike and the computer, have stayed. The most obvious change is the mixer, which in Carolines case does not feature a fader start. |

| Schon bei seiner ersten Ansage knüpfte Charlie an frühere, energiegeladene Zeiten an und vermittelte den Hörern einen Eindruck davon, was sie in den nächsten vier Stunden erwarten würde. In den ersten 30 Minuten von Charlies Show hielt ich mich zusammen mit Mark im Nachbarraum auf damit sich Charlie ganz auf sein Programm und die technische Einweisung von Dave Foster konzentrieren konnte. Kurz vor 18 Uhr mußte uns Dave allerdings verlassen, da er noch einen weiteren Job an diesem Abend hatte. Und auch Mark verabschiedete sich kurze Zeit später. Jetzt war ich also ganz alleine mit Charlie – das hatte ich nicht erwartet. Nachdem ich einige Zeit später merkte, daß sich Charlie etwas enspannte und den Rhythmus seines Programms gefunden hatte, begann ich damit einige Fotos zu machen. Wer aber glaubt, daß das Ganze für Charlie nicht schweißtreibend und anstrengend war, irrt gewaltig. So mußte er zum einen darauf achten, daß er in dem ihm unbekannten Studio keinen technischen Fehler machte und den falschen Knopf drückte, zum anderen setzte er seine ganze Konzentration auf die Auswahl des nächsten Musiktitels ein. Die meiste Zeit drehte er die Studiolautsprecher auf volle Lautstärke, was das Studio wie auf einem Schiff schwanken und erzittern ließ, um die Stimmung der Musik voll in sich aufzunehmen und den passenden Anschluß zu finden. Oft hatte er nur noch 30 Sekunden um den nächsten Titel zu finden und wenn dann auch noch das Telefon klingelte wurde es recht knapp. Mehr als einmal verwarf Charlie seine Auswahl im letzten Moment zugunsten eines besseren Titels. Nur ein- oder zweimal mußte er einen Song spielen, der nicht ganz in sein Konzept passte. | With his first link Charlie already was reminiscencing his former powerful presentation and gave the listeners a first impression on what they could be expecting from him during the next four hours. The first 30 minutes or so I stayed with Mark in the next room so that Charlie could concentrate fully on his programme and the technical instructions given by Dave Foster. However shortly bevor 6pm Dave had to leave as another job was waiting for him. And also Mark said his Good-Byes a little while later. Now I was all alone with Charlie in the studio – a situation I had not envisaged beforehand. A little while later, when I noticed that Charlie was relaxing and finding into the rhythm of his programme I started taking some photographs. However, who believes that Charlie's job was not hard work and strenuous is completely wrong. For example he had to take care that he didn't make a technical mistake and pressing the wrong knob in a studio he had never worked in before while he put his full concentration on choosing the next titel to play. Mostly the studio-speakers were put up to top level – shaking and vibrating the studio – generating the impression as if one were on a ship. This helped Charlie to get absorbed by the music and finding a suitable follow-up title. More than once he only had 30 second left to decide on a next track. If then the telephone would ring time was fast running out. Sometimes Charlie also changed his mind about the best title to play next at the last moment. But only once or twice Charlie was forced to play a title that did not fit into his concept. |

| Um Charlies Konzentration nicht zu stören, verhielt ich mich meist ruhig im Hintergrund, erst in der letzten Stunde seiner Show beteiligte ich mich etwas aktiver an der Musikauswahl und sortierte die verwendeten Mini-Disc zurück ins Archiv. Natürlich riefen auch viele Hörer im Studio an um Charlie Wolf mitzuteilen, daß sie seine Show super fänden und ihn gerne öfter hören würden. So erfreut Charlie auch über diese positiven Reaktionen war, so froh war er aber auch, daß es damals auf der Communicator bei Laser Radio kein Telefon im Studio gegeben hatte. Als zeitweise alle vier eingehenden Leitungen belegt waren, ging ich dazu über auch einige der Telefonanrufe entgegenzunehmen. Ob die Anrufer es seltsam fanden, jemanden mit deutschem Akzent bei Caroline anzutreffen? | To avoid disturbing Charlies concentration I mostly sat quietly in a back corner, occasionaly taking a photograph. It was only during the last hour that I more actively participated in choosing music and putting the played Mini-Disc back into the archive. Quite a few listeners phoned in to speak to Charlie and letting him know that they liked his show and would be pleased to hear him more often. As pleased as Charlie was about this positive reactions he was just as glad that there had not been a telephone in the studio at Laser Radio on the Communicator. At times all four incoming lines where flashing simultaneous and at such times I answered some of the calls. I wonder if some of the callers found it strange to find someone with a German accent answering the phone at Caroline. |

| Zum Ende der vierstündigen Show beschlossen Charlie und ich, daß Caroline von den Fortunes der richtige Titel zum Sendeschluß sei, da der eigentlich vorgeschriebene Song "on my way back home" nirgendwo im Studio aufzufinden war. Wir legten dann noch das Band von Roy Masters ein, räumten das Studio auf, schlossen ab und gaben den Schlüssel beim Nachtportier ab. Wir fanden es beide etwas seltsam, daß sich kein offizieller Caroline-Vertreter hatte blicken lassen und Charlie war sichtlich enttäuscht, daß er sicht jetzt nicht wie erwartet mit einigen seiner Freunde und Bekannten zusammensetzen konnte. Er machte sich deswegen direkt auf den mehrstündigen Rückweg nach Bristol. Ich hatte allerdings den Eindruck, daß er trotzdem Spaß gehabt hatte, wieder einmal eine Show ohne die Einschränkungen einer vorgeschriebenen Titel-Liste machen zu können. | For the end of the show, Charlie and I decided, that it would be appropiate to play Caroline by the Fortunes, as the song that was normally played at the end of the transmission – on my way back home – was nowhere to be found in the studio. Finally we started the Roy Masters tape, tidied up the studio, locked up and gave the key to the night porter. We both were amazed by the fact that nobody from Radio Caroline had turned up. It was obvious that Charlie was disapointed that he couldn't spend some time with some of his former colleagues and maybe go for a pint to the pub. Instead he had no choice but to head straight back home for Bristol. Nevertheless I was under the impression that Charlie had fun during his show and enjoyed very much playing music of his own choosing without the restriction of a play-list. |
