Der Tag an dem die Musik „fast“ starb!

Am 14. August 1967 trat das britische „Marine, &c., Broadcasting (Offences) Act 1967“ in Kraft. Es stellte die Versorgung der legal von ausserhalb der Drei-Meilen-Zone agierenden Seesender unter Strafe. Dieses sogenannte „Anti-Piraten-Gesetz“ brachte alle Offshore-Sender vor der englischen Küste zum Schweigen – nur Radio Caroline zeigte sich rebellisch und setze seine Programme – unter erschwerten Bedingungen – fort. Zum fünfzigsten Jahrestag dieses Gesetzes feierte sich das immer noch aktive Radio Caroline selbst. Im Princes Theater in Clacton-on-Sea gab es den ganzen Tag lang eine bunte Mischung von Vorträgen, Filmvorführungen, Podiumsdiskussionen, Ausstellung, Souvenirverkauf und aktuelle Informationen. Natürlich waren auch viele frühere und heutige Mitarbeiter und DJ's von Radio Caroline anwesend die man näher kennen lernen konnte.
Auch die Musik kam nicht zu kurz. Am Abend traten zwei Live-Bands auf: „Rich Clifford and the Young Once“ und „The Fortunes“.

The Day The Music 'Almost' Died!

On August 14th, 1967, the British "Marine, &c., Broadcasting (Offences) Act 1967" came into force. It punished the supply of offshore radio stations legally operating outside the three-mile zone. This so-called "anti-pirate law" silenced all offshore stations off the English coast but one - only the rebellious Radio Caroline continued its programmes - under more difficult conditions. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of this law, the still active Radio Caroline celebrated itself. At the Princes Theater in Clacton-on-Sea, there was a colorful mixture of lectures, film screenings, panel discussions, exhibition, souvenir sales and up-to-date information throughout the day. Of course there were also many former and today's employees and DJs of Radio Caroline present who you could talk to reminiscing about the past.
Of course music was part of the event as well. In the evening two live bands played: "Rich Clifford and the Young Once" and "The Fortunes".

Ray Clark (Mick Williams bei Caroline 558 in den 70er und 80er Jahren) führte durch das Programm und eröffnete die Veranstaltung um 10:15 Uhr. Zum Auftakt gedachte Roger ‚Twiggy‘ Day den in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten verstorbenen Mitarbeitern der verschieden Offshore Stationen. Natürlich erzählte er auch einige Anekdoten aus seiner bewegten Seesender-Zeit. Auch Alan Turner, der bereits seit 1964 bei Radio Caroline und damit einer der langjährigsten Mitarbeiter ist, erinnerte sich an einige seiner Erlebnisse während der Tätigkeit bei Radio Caroline North vor der Insel Man.

Roger ,Twiggy' Day started the day by remembering employees of the various offshore stations who had died in the past decades. Of course, he also told some anecdotes from his eventful times at the offshore stations. Alan Turner, who has been with Radio Caroline since 1964 and is one of the longest-standing members of the Caroline family, recalled some of his experiences while working at Radio Caroline North off the Isle of Man.

Beim nächsten Programmpunkt drehte sich alles um die Fortstationen Radio Sutch und Radio City. Die Ermordung von Reg Calvert im Jahr 1966, dem Besitzer dieser Stationen, war damals ein entscheidender Faktor in der Ratifizierung des MOA. Seine Tochter Susan Moore trat zum ersten Mal in der Öffentlichkeit auf und berichtete, teilweise mit bisher unveröffentlichtem Material aus dem Familienarchiv, über ihre Forschung zu den Intrigen während der polizeilichen Ermittlungen nach der Ermordung ihres Vaters und den Unstimmigkeiten in der Gerichtsverhandlung.

Anschließend berichtete der aus Kalifornien angereiste Nigel Pearson über den aktuellen Stand des kurz vor der Vollendung stehenden Dokumentarfilms über Radio Caroline. Er hatte einen Trailer mitgebracht der hier zum ersten Mal zu sehen war.

The next item on the agenda revolved around the radio stations Radio Sutch and Radio City. The assassination of Reg Calvert in 1966, the owner of these stations, was at that time a decisive factor in the ratification of the MOA. His daughter, Susan Moore, appeared for the first time in public and told us, partly with hitherto unpublished material from the family archive, about her research into the intrigues during the police investigation after the murder of her father and the inconsistencies in the court ruling.

Next was Nigel Pearson, who had travelled from California. He reported on the current status of the soon to be completed documentary movie about Radio Caroline. He had brought along a trailer that was shown here for the first time.

Nach der Pause informierte uns Stationsmanager Peter Moore über die neuesten Entwicklungen und Pläne bei Radio Caroline. Chris Williams von Manx Radio berichtete über die positive Hörerreaktion auf die Sendungen von Caroline North und bestätigte, dass die Ausstrahlungen auf 1368 kHz bis auf weiteres gesichert sind. „The Great Tilbury Escape”, ein professionell gemachter Film von David Esp über die abenteuerliche Fahrt/Flucht der Ross Revenge von Tilbury zum Ankerplatz im Fluss Blackwater wurde uraufgeführt und der ehemalige Radio Caroline DJ Nick Richards erzählte Details der letzten Stunden an Bord der M.V. Mi Amigo, bevor sie am 20.3.1980 sank.

Following the break station manager Peter Moore informed us about the latest developments and plans at Radio Caroline. Chris Williams from Manx Radio reported on the positive listeners' response to the broadcasts of Radio Caroline North and confirmed that the broadcast on 1368 kHz is secured until further notice. "The Great Tilbury Escape", a professionally made film by David Esp on the adventurous sailing/escape of the Ross Revenge from Tilbury to the anchorage in the River Blackwater was premiered and the former Radio Caroline DJ Nick Richards told details of the last hours on board the M.V. Mi Amigo before she sank on March 20th, 1980.

Letztendlich ist dann noch der Film „3 Mile Limit” - die Geschichte des neuseeländischen Seesenders Radio Hauraki - zu sehen. Er endet gegen 17 Uhr und eigentlich sollten jetzt die beiden vorgesehenen Bands auftreten. Wegen technischer Schwierigkeiten beim Aufbau verzögert sich der Beginn des musikalischen Teils jedoch. Eine willkommene Gelegenheit sich die umfangreiche „Flashback ´67 Exhibition“ oder die Schiffsmodelle von Hans Hettelder anzusehen. Außerdem eine letzte Möglichkeit Freunde und Bekannte abzulichten.

Finally, the film "3 Mile Limit" - the history of the New Zealand offshore station Radio Hauraki - can be seen. The film ends at about 5 pm and according to plan the two bands should start playing now. However, due to technical difficulties in setting up the equipment, the beginning of the musical part is delayed. A welcome opportunity to view the extensive "Flashback '67 Exhibition" or the ship models by Hans Hettelder. Also, a last chance to make friends and acquaintances.

Zwischen 19 und 22 Uhr können die beeindruckende Coverband „Rich Clifford & the Young Once“ sowie die legendären „The Fortunes“ die erlebnisreiche und interessante Veranstaltung doch noch musikalisch abrunden.

Between 7pm and 10pm, the impressive cover band "Rich Clifford & the Young Once" and the legendary "The Fortunes" can round off the eventful and interesting event musically.
