Die letzte Sondersendung von BBC Radio Essex vom Feuerschiff LV18 aus Harwich gab es im Jahr 2009 (mein Bericht). Aus Anlass des 50. Jahrestages des „Marine, &c., Broadcasting (Offences) Act 1967“ konnte Steve Scruton seine Chefs für eine Reaktivierung von „Pirate BBC Essex“ gewinnen. Am 10. August begann man mit der Installation der Studiotechnik auf der Brücke der LV18. Das reguläre Programm von Keith Skues am Sonntag dem 13. August, von 22 bis 1 Uhr, kam bereits von der LV18. Die eigentliche Sondersendung von Pirate BBC Essex zu der verschiedene ehemalige Seesender DJ's angereist waren, lief jedoch am Montag dem 14. August, dem eigentlichen Jahrestag, von 9 bis 15 Uhr. Am Samstag (12. August) und Sonntag (13. August) gab es bereits die Möglichkeit bei der abendlichen Veranstaltung "Meet the Pirates" schon einige der DJ's zu treffen und ihren Geschichten und Anekdoten zu lauschen.

The previous special broadcast of BBC Radio Essex from the LV18 in Harwich took place many years ago in 2009 (see my blog). On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the "Marine, &c., Broadcasting (Offences) Act 1967" Steve Scruton was able to convince his bosses to reactivate "Pirate BBC Essex". On August 10th, the installation of the studio equipment on the bridge of the LV18 began. The regular program of Keith Skues on Sunday the 13th of August, from 22 to 1 clock, already came from the LV18. The actual special transmission of Pirate BBC Essex ran on Monday the 14th August, the actual anniversary, from 9am to 3pm. Several former Offshore Radio DJs had travelled to Harwich to present programmes. On Saturday (August 12th) and Sunday (August 13th), there was already the possibility to meet some of the DJ's at the evening event "Meet the Pirates" and to listen to their stories and anecdotes.

Die Programme von Pirate BBC Essex begannen am Montag, dem 14. August um 9 Uhr mit Roger ‚Twiggy‘ Day. Anders als bei früheren Sendungen konnte man das Deck des ehemaligen Feuerschiffes betreten und die Geschehnisse im Studio über einen Monitor per Live-Cam verfolgen. Ständig trafen neue Besucher ein die die nicht auf Sendung befindlichen DJ's um Autogramme baten oder mit ihnen für ein Foto posierten. Der Sendeplan war wie folgt:

The programmes of Pirate BBC Essex began on Monday, August 14th at 9am with Roger ,Twiggy' Day. Unlike as at previous events, you could enter the deck of the former ligh vessel and watch the happenings in the studio by live-cam on a monitor. There were always new visitors arriving who asked the DJ's not currently on air for autographs or were posing with them for a photograph. The broadcast schedule was as follows:

Ein besonderes Ereignis während dieser Sondersendung war der Abschied von Dave Cash, der am 21.10.2016 verstorben war. Gegen 11 Uhr legte das RNLI-Rettungsschiff Albert Brown nahe der LV18 an. Auf dem Schiff befanden sich u. a. Dave’s Witwe Sara sowie Johnnie Walker, der Dave’s Asche dem Wasser der Nordsee übergab - dem Ort, an dem Dave vielen seiner Radiokollegen zum ersten Mal begegnet war. Unter der Anteilnahme vieler Hundert Freunde und Bekannter fand dieser Vorgang in völliger Stille statt. Die Musik schwieg bei Pirate BBC Essex und selbst die Möwen schienen für kurze Zeit ihr Kreischen einzustellen. Ein würdevoller Abschied der den Anwesenden in Erinnerung bleiben wird.

A special event during this special program was the farewell to Dave Cash, who had died on Oct 21st, 2016. At about 11 o'clock, the RNLI liveboat Albert Brown docked near the LV18. On the ship, amongst others, were Dave's widow Sara and Johnnie Walker, who scattered Dave's ashes into the North Sea, where Dave had met many of his radio colleagues for the first time. With sympathy many hundreds of friends and acquaintances watched this process in complete silence. The music stopped at Pirate BBC Essex and even the seagulls seemed to stop their shrieks for a short time. A graceful and dignified farewell that will be remembered by everybody present.

Nach einem ergreifenden Moment der Stille geht das Leben auf der LV18 weiter und bei Pirate BBC Essex legt Norman St. John den nächsten Titel auf. Auf der Promenade lauscht man dem Programm und trifft alte Freunde und knüpft neue Bekanntschaften. Auf dem Ha'penny Pier kann man durch das Angebot eines Verkaufsstandes stöbern oder die Seesender-Ausstellung im Besucherzentrum besuchen.

After a poignant moment of silence, life continues on the LV18 and at Pirate BBC Essex Norman St. John plays the next record. On the promenade one listens to the program and meets old friends and makes new acquaintances. On the Ha'penny Pier you can browse through the offer of a sales stand or visit the Offshore Radio exhibition in the visitor center.

Zum Sendeschluss von Pirate BBC Essex um 15 Uhr wurde live auf die Ross Revenge zu Radio Caroline geschaltet und bis 16 Uhr wurde das Sonderprogramm von Radio Caroline nicht nur über Manx Radio, sondern auch über die Frequenzen von BBC Radio Essex ausgestrahlt. Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte war damit ein Programm von Radio Caroline offiziell über BBC-Frequenzen zu empfangen. Während es die DJ’s eilig hatten einen Schnellzug nach London zu erwischen um dort an einem Mega-Wiedersehen mit weit über 100 ehemaligen Mitarbeiten der verschiedensten Seesender teilzunehmen, genossen die vielen Hundert Besucher weiterhin die besondere Atmosphäre in Harwich und verliefen sich nur langsam.

After the close down of Pirate BBC Essex from the LV18 at 3pm the broadcast was switched over to Radio Caroline and continued live from the Ross Revenge until 4 pm. Radio Caroline's special program was broadcast not only on Manx Radio but also on the frequencies of BBC Radio Essex. For the first time in history, a program by Radio Caroline was officially transmitted on BBC frequencies. While the DJ's were in a hurry to catch a train to London to take part in a mega reunion with over 100 former colleagues from various offshore radio stations, the hundreds of visitors continued to enjoy the special atmosphere in Harwich and proceeded homewards only slowly.
